best way to clean a baseball uniform

Watching your child play baseball is one of the greatest joys of parenthood.  Seeing them make a big play or slide into home plate can give you a surge of pride.  The one thing that parents do not look forward to, is having to wash their child’s baseball uniform after a big game. 

Playing youth baseball can get dirty on a normal day.  If there are rainy conditions that cause the clay to get muddy, uniform cleanup duty will be much more intensive.  If you have multiple kids that play, or if your child plays multiple games in one day, the labor of washing these baseball uniforms can become a lengthy and frustrating procedure.

First Steps to Cleaning a Baseball Uniform

One of the biggest keys to removing any stain effectively is to tackle it as early as possible.  Obviously in a game or tournament situation, treating a stain early is not really a possibility.  As soon as you get home, though, the baseball uniform needs your attention!.

When you first assess the baseball uniform stain situation, you want to try and shake out as much dirt from the pants or jersey as you can.  You would be surprised how much this can help to remove stains.  Once you add water, you run the risk of spreading the stain, so try and remove as much dirt as you can before you start.  

​Second Steps to Cleaning a Baseball Uniform

Soaking stained uniforms in hot water is a great first step, and only takes about 10-15 minutes.  Hot water helps to loosen stains up so that they are ready to be removed.  If the water looks visibly dirty, you should change this and let them soak for longer.  

After the baseball uniform has soaked until the water remains clear, you should try scrubbing the heavily stained areas with a strong soap.  Fels-Naptha is a laundry detergent that is used for pre-treating stains. You can easily find this in the laundry section of any larger grocery store.  

Once you get the soap lathered up on the stains, you should see them starting to lift off the uniform. Once you think that you have all of the stains removed, you can throw it in the washing matching.  You can rinse the soap out before washing, but that is not necessary.  

If you still notice that there are stains after you take your baseball uniform out of the washing machine, do not put it into the dryer.  The heat from the dryer will set the stain.  You can try scrubbing the stained areas again with soap to try and get more of the stains out of the uniform.
